QUESTION 5 • According to Kumpfer (1999) resilience can be de?ned as “the process, capacity or outcome of successful adaptation despite challenges or threatening circumstances. . .good outcomes despite high-risk status, sustained competence under threat and recovery from trauma”. This basically means that the resilient people are able to overcome obstacles or challenges that they may face and develop productive coping strategies for future use. Kumpfer identified 6 factors by which resilience is adapted. • 1) Stressors • This is the first stage of building up resilience. It happens when a person’s equilibrium is disturbed by external stimuli. It is also worth mentioning that how a person sees and understands this disruption will determine the level of stress they experience. With the case of Ahmad, he was experiencing flu like symptoms and so he went to get tested and his results came back positive for Covid.2) The external environment • This factor plays a significant role in a person building up their resilience. These are the people around that person. According to Mampane (2005) they serve as a barrier that softens or worsens the impact of the disruption on the person. This means that the people around the said person can help the person deal with the disruption in their lives, these could be family peers and friends. In Ahmad’s case he has supportive and loving family and friends who were with him while he was sick and in the hospital. 3) The transaction processes • This is the stage whereby the person must employ different constructive approaches to dealing with the disruption in their lives. This happens by taking a combative situation and turning it into a more protective environment, examples are active copping and reframing. Mampane (2005) states that this can be done by being in the company of prosocial individuals in this environment who will serve as protective factors. In Ahmad’s case we see this as he was admitted into the hospital after testing..
